HIP District celebrates Summer Solstice with sales, promos and live music this weekend

Everyone’s invited to celebrate the awakening of summer this weekend in historic Laguna style with music, sales, and restaurant specials in the HIP District. The HIP District is Laguna’s neighborhood just south of downtown on South Coast Highway and Glenneyre from Thalia to Bluebird.

All over the world, summer solstice is experienced in a number of different ways. In some places people trek to an astronomical high point to observe the sky honoring the warmth and light of the sun. Some celebrate by making a flower crown, by starting a garden, visiting a farm, or playing in the water. Customs include bonfires in Ireland, to putting flowers under a pillow in Sweden as a way to dream of your future soulmate, to day-long yoga experiences in Manhattan.

Joe Hanauer, a HIP District property owner, who along with Susan Elliott is a coordinator of the HIP District, said, “Laguna’s flower children were never to be outdone in celebrating the Summer Solstice. So following in that tradition, the HIP District (which appropriately stands for Historic and Interesting Places) is celebrating in style.”

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 21-23, 45 HIP District merchants have joined together to offer sales, gifts, and drawings to usher in the summer in traditional Laguna style. Participating restaurants are offering discounts or special treats for the three-day event. Discounts from 10 to 25 percent are offered by participating stores throughout the District. Just as Fete de la Musique filled our streets last weekend with wonderful music, and just like our festivals will usher in throngs of visitors from all over the world in just a few weeks, the HIP District is joining in the summer spirit with this Summer Solstice Celebration.
